I got to the Consular around 8 this morning. This was my first time to apply for a visa to USA, and did not expect so many people want to go to USA. Obviously I was a little bit nervous even though I told myself again and again that I could go to this MBA program next year now if I could not pass the visa interview today. And this thought put the pressure off me and I felt being myself someway.
I scheduled an urgent interview due to my program kicking off in the early August. I had been suspected for some days as I was not sure if I got a wrong date from the phone call from the Consular. But it turned out my worry was obviated. They keep a good record of the appointments, regular or urgent, separately. You'd better tell them that you have an urgent appointment so that your name can be looked up in the list quickly.
When I walked into the hall, I was amazed by the number of the people waiting for the interview. But most of the people are not for F1 student visa. First you have to do the check-in, a line being reserved for F1 visa. When I came to the check-in window, my 156 form was returned after some circles on it, signifying that I had to put the Chinese besides the pinyin, and some codes needed for surname and given name. Again better to take one pen along with you. I had to ask for favors for using the pens from other people.
After the check-in, you will assign a number and wait for your turn for the interview. Please note that the number is assigned at random, and you will notice the number for interview jumps. Just sit back and wait for your turn ...
It was noisy and I was kept waiting for at least for 45 minutes, when I wanted to use wash-room. When I showed up in the hall again, I saw my number was on the screen, and my interview session began. I hurried to the window, smiling, and saw a beautiful black-haired lady inside the window, who was reading my files. "Good morning, Madam", I said. She smiled back and said "a minute".
She asked for my admission letter, my title deed to my house, and pictures of my son and my wife. She asked the age of my son, and checked if my wife and son are now in USA. I said no. But she showed me the 156 form, on which I checked they both were in States. Obviously I made a mistake, and I told her frankly that I made an honest mistake. She wanted evidence that my family is in Shanghai now, smiling and showing my signature on the document. She also said that the pictures are too old as my son in the photos was much younger. She asked me to pass all the documents I took along with me to her. And she almost had put back my i-20 form through the hole under the window.
The last straw, aha ... I asked her to see the first page of the i-20 form, noting the line of family expenses. I told her that in the first place I planned to take them along with me but now I changed my mind. She saw this and appeared to satisfied with my explanation.
Next she asked to read the offer letter from another school, which offers me fatter scholarship. That is a lot of money, she said. I also showed her a job offer letter I had just got and remains valid. I told her if my visa application is turned down, I will pick it up.
A smile came over her beautiful face. "You passed", she said.
"Thank you, have a nice day!" I said, not much excited as I once had imagined.
I further checked with her on what action I should do about the mistake. She said she was foot-noting my 156 form, signifying it was a mistake I made. I nodded to her, showing my appreciation to her, and hurring to leave for my delivery of the visa.
That is the account of my first visa interview experience.
