vo: So you've been to US before?
me: Yeah, twice.
vo: show me your previous visa.
me: (take out my old visa) there you go.
vo: where's your dad now?
me: in china, xx university, as a prof. of finance
vo: ok. where will you study?
me: univ. of xx, i'll be studying financial engineering
vo: oh, financial engineering. (look at my offer letter) what's your current major?
me: finance
vo: but i see on your DS-167 that your major is finance/atmospheric sciences
me: oh, i studied atmospherics sciences for the first two years, and switched my major to finance in my junior year.
vo: that's not normal in china
me: well, my univ. rule allows 5% of students to change their majors.
vo: ok. it shows on your i-20 that it is an expensive 2-year program. How do you pay for the tuition?
me: my parents will sponsor my study. we all think it a good investment and my family has a steady cash flow. you wanna take a look at my certificate of deposit and my dad's tax-bill?
vo: sure. you dad can make xxx,xxx rmb per year?! that's not normal for professors
me: not normal? i think it's quite normal. other professors of his level get paid this amount in the B-School
vo: no, it's not normal. why's he paid so much?
me: well, he's in charge of the xxx program, which brings him a bonus of xx,xxx annually. and he teaches various kinds of classes.
me: he's also the independent director of two listed companies. (showed him the evidence)
vo: no no.. you must provide the original contract.
me: don't have it. ok, just put that aside. the tax-bill is real, and it shows he earns enough to support me.
vo: well, that will cost him every single penny he earns for the next two years.
me: see, that's investment, you'll get good return on that. we still have enough money in the bank and stock market(拿出更多的存折和股票交易记录)
vo: the name on the certificate is not right. that's not your dad.
me: of course not. that's my mom!
vo: how can she earn so much if she only get x,xxx yuan per month?
me: well, my dad earns the money, and my mom took it to the bank and deposited. so the money is under her name
vo: ok. the name is not right
me: (你这不是胡搅蛮缠么)they're the same name. given name goes first in pinyin.
vo: why your dad's income is not the same every month?
me: basically, he only get the same amount of basic salary. as i mentioned, his salary varies if he teaches different classes.
vo: that's not normal. the university pays you the same amount to teach certain courses.
me: that only applies to some classes. for example, it is different for MBA and EMBA classes.
vo: then why the tax rate is different?
me: cuz he earns different amount of money every months! the tax rate varies as the income changes. there are several levels for tax, same as in US
vo: then why the rate for xx,xxx is only 20%?
me: becuase it's paid as bonus at the end of each year. for bonus, like dividends, you only pay 20%.
vo: ok... 开始对着税单敲数字 i'll grant you the visa this time, but i don't believe you
me: (shrugged) well, you should, all my documents are real
vo: (shaked head) no. i don't believe you. i think there's some creative accounting, but i can't see through the math. go to No.12.
me: (shaked head) well, thanks. nice day.
