12pm, June 1, Shanghai
Window 9

V: Visa Officer - an American young woman, brown hair pigtailed
H: Me

V: How are you doing?
H: Fine. And you?
V: I'm okay. (looking at my forms and then the computer) Why Darden?
H: Because it's a great school. And I especially like its teaching
method, which is mainly case based study, and its strength in general
management. It matches my career goal.
V: How long is the program?
H: Two years. I noticed in the I-20 that it's 21 months, but we call
it a two-year program.
V: (looking at I-20) How will you finance?
H: I'll use my personal funding and family sponsorship. Do you want
to see my bank statement?
V: Yes.
H: (handed in financial documents including a one page fund summary,
followed by three sheets of Bank of China certificate of deposit, one
page Fortis Haitong Investment fund certificate and my dad's letter
of Sponsorship.)
V: (read every page very carefully for about 0.5 minutes) The
majority of your funds were deposited in the recent months.
H: Yes, that's because I put most of my funds in the stock market. As
the interest rate is low, it's not worthwhile to save the money in
the bank. As you can see, I also put some money in the investment
management company.
V: Do you have a resume?
H: Yes. (Handed in my resume). Do you want to see my name card?
V: No. I know this company. (and then read my resume carefully)
V: what do you plan to do after graduation?
H: In the long term, I want to advance to a general management role
in a Chinese insurance company but, to achieve that, after graduation
I plan to work at middle management position for a multinational
insurance company such as XXX in China for a few years. This way I
can put my education into practice and update my local industry
knowledge - great changes will take place in the next two years here.
V: Have you ever been abroad?
H: Yes, I have.
V: Where have you been to?
H: I’ve been to Singapore on business, traveled Cambodia to see
Angkor Wat and Hongkong for training.
V: Do you have any siblings?
H: No, I’m the only child. Do you want to see my Household Register?
V: No.
V: What did your parents do?
H: My dad is a senior official of XXX. He’s been working for it for
about 20 years. He joined as the Treasurer but later was promoted to
the Director role…My mom is a Quality Control Manager of XXX
V: Have they been abroad?
H: Yes, they’ve been to Holland, UK and… mainly in Europe, but not
US… and Hongkong, Taiwan.
V: I’m sorry I can’t give you the visa today. (pick up the chop)
H: Why?
V: I’m not convinced that you are a legitimate student. This paper
explains why your application is refused…
H: Do you think I should reapply?
V: You could but…
H: Thank you.

Lessons learned:

1.Read the body language of the VO. She opened my passport and picked
up that 'reason of deny' paper several times but I didn't realize
that they were bad signs. Otherwise, I could have detected the
message earlier and tried to persuade her when she was still
hesitating... I was attacked unguarded!

2.Be dominant during the interview. Actually I’ve learned about this
advice many times but I didn’t take it seriously until I got
rejected today. VO is not a pleasant person so I don’t bother to
talk to her much. As a hindsight, I think we should all treat VO the
same way as a sales person convince a customer…sell your intention
to study, financial status, strong ties…

3.Show off your supporting documents, or at least ask if s/he want to
see. I assumed my answers were sufficient to her questions so I didn’
t bother to show off my documents… What a waste! I brought them with
me anyway.
