LIONHEART,YOU SEEM TO KNOW A LOT ABOUT WHARTON。 ARE YOU APPLYING THIS YEAR?

1Hoemwork, web search and due dilegence first to know what the Fortune 500 demand from us.
2.Self analysis. What do I have and other students don\'t have.
3.To be proactive and aggressive in the party to highlight my uniqueness.
4.Be ready to accept failure. If one company rejects me, I still believe there are 499 companies waiting for me.
Alright, that\'s all.
I hope this will help you.

1。I asked the interview: what is your current position in your company and why are you so successful in this position?

JamesHose, Thank you!
You are part of my success!

My wife is my leader! She told me where I shoud turn left to buy the ticket, where to get the forms to fill, where to enter the first class seat because there are some foreigners who will give me some sense of being abroad and where to buy the 3goto telephone card.

So, I acted as if I have been to Hong Kong for many times. I didn\'t have any difficulty of being an alien. This kept me in a very good mood. I was at the best status at that moment.

I had mock interview with Chuck with the my TV turning on in my 90 square meters living room. So, I was not scared to have interview in the open area where there were a lot of distractions.

hehe, first congratulation on you for your great interview! but i have to say something about Wharton interview according to my own experience.

last year, I also had an extremely successful interview with a Wharton alumna who even promised me to support me to get in with his fullest efforts. i believe i was much more excited at that time than you are now. actually I knew from the feedback session that he gave me very good evaluation and adcom even mentioned some wonderful details in the interview. however, I got an rejection at last.

as a re-applicant this year, i had my hub interview in shanghai last Friday. nothing special. i think it went well, but not so well as the one i had last year.

now, i do believe that interview plays an important but very limited role in the whole applicaiton package. although adcom has repeatedly clarified that all interview forms will be considered equally, actually interviews are highly biased by personal interests and experiences. therefore i can understand why adcom pays small attention to interview, regardless of how well you have performed and how well your interviewer has evaluated you in the report. the significance of interivew is limited as long as you did not perform very poor which can surely cause a ding.

anyway, i still congratulation you.
let\'s wait for the final decision date. good luck to all of us.

2。Actually, the interviewer told me that the Admission Committee has the final judgement. He said even the President of Upenn can\'t let me in if the Admission Committee says no. So, it is why I still tried to call the representatives of Wharton. I wanted to have some hint from them. I am still prepared to accept a rejection or waitinglist on Dec. 23rd.

Apart from Wharton, I still wait for the invitation of HBS.

I am open to any unintended results. Don\'t worry about me.
Even if that happens, I have nothing to lose. I have wonderful job, lovely family, 200 square meters house and a Nissan Cefiro. And secret amount of stocks!

2。THEMANGIA,WHY UNLESS YOU ARE MARRIED WITH KIDS,OTHER LIFE IS SHORT?CAN YOU ILLUSTRATE IT A LITTLE MORE FOR ME?

LP,IT IS REAL。

hehe, just curious. why spent so much time practicing on your own resume? since it is totally written by yourself, and talks about your own affairs, you must be very familiar with it.
besides, my interviewer did not ask too much about my resume, just about why i left my former company and continued to initiate another one.

I am familiar with the content. I want to make the best effect. Therefore, I practiced six times untill I looked like a professor teaching the study of myself.

I am not native speaker. I often have problems when I have good Chinese ideas but can\'t express them in English. The more I tried before the interview, the less annoyed I would feel during the interview.

Columbia is notoriously unfriendly to Chinese applicants and maybe has the lowest accept rate for Chinese applicants.
I applied it last year but got rejection, while I helped another friend to get in it. both of us feel extremely exhausted both mentally and physically through the whole application procedure for it.
Columbia is a selfish and narrow-minded b-school and is not worthy of its reputation. the more i understand it, the more i dislike it. I swear never to apply Columbia again.
Wharton also dinged me last year. however the more i understand it, the more i like it. I am so attracted to Wharton\'s generous, just, and innovative personality that it is my only target this year.

Don’t worry. They interviewed about 15 people with China background in the first round. Considering that they might take 10 or 12 out of the 15 people group. Your chances are as good as gold! I figure, among 4 of US, there will be a least 3 winners. Relax and keep your fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear that bad news,

Your problem is simple and obvious - an egotist. Looks back all your threads here, you\'re boastful to the point of being obnoxious. You have only one string to your conversational violin, namely, youself, and on it you play a number of monotonous variations. What you think, what you have done, how good you are, how you would solve the problems of the world, ect. I bet, besides your house square feet and car, what\'s next? How much money you\'re making? What\'s your latest amorous conquest?

One thing for sure, Wharton looking for a team builder, not egotistic. Your philosophy strikingly conflicks with Wharton\'s.

However, I do wish you a good luck to HBS.

wxh7314,
I am sorry to hear the bad news. comfort. The application is the the procedure to look back on your life and growing up. I think cthd007 did point out some of your weakness. Maybe you did not show your best work in your essays, or you and Wharton just do not match each other. I know how painful to accept this result, not because of money, but your time, your energy, and your hope. Ding from Wharton does not mean you can not be a successful business leader. If you are really interested in Wharton, you may find some chance to visit the campus and talk with students and faculties to learn more about it and try next year.

I admire you for your sincere comments. Thank you really. I understand you warned me not to drop into egoism and egotism. I will never do that.

My principle is to be a true man and to do true things. I just want to telll the friends in this forum what was going on my mind and what I experienced during the journey of application. I don\'t mean to boast about myself. I want to be an inspiring element to those friends who are working hard in the process. As you know, one drawback of Chinese education is to act like a harsh judge who will never let you feel good about yourself. I suffered a lot by judging myself strictly in the past.

But it is after I became a member of Chasedream that I began to appreciate my positive aspects and to notice what I am good at. It is  a wonderful change of perspective. I hope you can understand the struggle between the western life phylosophy and the Chinese way of life outlook, which most of us experience every minute in our steps of chasing dream.

You are my friend!

wxh7314 brother, sorry to hear your unanticipated outcome from Wharton. I believe lots of our members here all very appreciate your kindness for sharing your valuable experience. I also am very happy to know that you started to look at same issues from different prespective after joining our Chasedream forum.

Wharton just wants to pick up a name into its class, however you put your true heart to Wharton. All in all, you have to realize this is the type of game your have to play. I\'m sure you will adjust yourself tomorrow and head to your bright future.

If you really want to know "why?", the simplest answer is: there is some other Chinese applicants in your pool outperformed you in this game. Could be many reasons:
1) someone who visited campus and had really nice contact with school;
2) your academic part (710 and maybe your weak response during interview);
3) your English skill;
4) your lacking of international experience;
5) someone from same background with you (government?) has better something else.
6) you didn\'t understand the Wharton mantra well enough, that would show in your essays and interview;

We all know it\'s just a stupid game and none of above possible weak areas will prevent you from having a successful career.

Thank you for your protection. Wu Xinghua is my pen name.

To Chipmunk:
Yes, I agree it is a game. The key of the game is to have advanced training. So-called network, or making friends with those alumni, is big illusion. If you can not establish yourself in your industry, no foreigners will be your friends.

Moreover, MBA is sort of study. We are competing for the rights to pay money to a school. Does it sound crazy? Being admitted and graduated from Wharton does not guarantee anything, not job, not friends circle or success in the business world.

Somebody must have played better than me. But it is still possible that somebody is more to the taste of the admission committee.

I have nice contact with the representative but didn\'t visit the campus.
I studied mathematics in ECNU and my interview was good.  I meant good but I can\'t disclose further details because I have to protect my interviewer.
I believe Wharton is picking up someone that has long hands-on experience in the finance service, demonstrates leadership and innovation, and shows entrepreneurial spirits. I focused on these three aspects to differentiate myself. I once thought I was a great match for Wharton. But alas!

Anyway, career first. MBA is a supplement.

wxh7314 bro, I\'m so glad to be one of your friend, and appreciate your level of moral stature and perspicuity.

As i mentioned in my last email, I have no intention to "insult" you in any way. the "conclusion" I made was just based on the posts, though i read your threads throughly and carefully before, but, unfortunately, not your mind.

make no mistake, I do respect not only your inspiration and passion, but also any other candidates\' on CD. Simply put,  i\'m one of Wharton\'s enthusiast too. It might be true, Wharton is not the best B-school, but it\'s the finest one in the world.

As to the game, personally, i think we have to follow the rule of Wharton\'s law, but rather than a rule of thumb. after all, we, are anxious to play the game, not Wharton. without doubt, Wharton is the only king maker for the rule of the game!

What you failed for now, is just your imagination of your future work life that doesn\'t match the adcom\'s belief, nothing else. A MBA is just one of bridges that woud bind your past to the future you believe, what else?

Though, one door @Wharton was closed, another door is still open if you want to knock, knock. Wharton is one of few schools allows, even encourages, its prospective students to apply for both full time MBA and EMBA program within the same academic year if applicable. The deadline of the MBA for executives @ Wharton is on Feb1, 2004 (one round, no rolling process). If you\'re interested in, the things you need to do is to register another account, write three more essays, schedule a campus\' interview, and you\'re in and read to play a new game again.

Personally, i encourage you to apply because the way you\'ll not only keep the decent job you love, but also build the netwowrk of business contact you dream. Again, lose here, win there.

All in all, good luck to your future endeavors.

That\'s very nice of you to give me good advice. I like the Wharton courses and knowledge but I don\'t like the adcom. I have some aching in some part fo my heart. Maybe it is the feeling of hurt.

I have the courage to accept the unfair game and give congratulations to those admitted candidates at the same time. But I got some complex with the adcom. I don\'t want to see them again or deal with them. I need a rest. Life is so beautiful and I can\'t miss the bright sunshine in Shenzhen. Winners take all. The game is over.

I plan to know my weakness from the feedback session before I decide to reapply or apply for Wharton EMBA.

wxh7314 bro, take a break if you feel getting hurt, not a panic.

Some researches for EMBA as your reference, in case you need it.

1. The adcoms in charge of EMBA are different from those who in charge of MBA.

2. EMBA has two capums, namely, Philadelphia and San Francisco. I bet you wanna be in San Francisco for short flight.

3. A MBA is much compete than an EMBA does, not only in admission, but also in the periods of study and job search. It\'s safe to say that you probably only comete with youself or a few of Asian candidates if you want to apply for EMBA.

4. The only difficulty is to convince your boss to sponsor it

Dream what you want to dream,

go where you what to go,

because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

New king - Howard Kaufold, if you\'re interested in west coast EMBA.

A Conversation with Howard Kaufold, Director of the Wharton MBA Program for Executives
What kinds of things should you be looking at when deciding whether to apply to a particular EMBA program?

I\'d advise you to look at several factors. First, what is the equivalence of the program to a full-time MBA? How does the curriculum compare? Do you want a very rigorous program or one that is less demanding?
Second, how selective is the school? How many people are applying to the program? Of those who apply, how many are admitted? Does the school require all applicants to take the GMAT? Many executive MBA programs waive that requirement; at Wharton, we hold our EMBA and full-time applicants to the same high standards.
Third, what about the program\'s schedule and overall learning environment? How well does it fit with your career needs at this time and your personal learning style?
Also, how big is the alumni network and what do the alumni do? That\'s a gauge of the opportunities that your MBA will open for you and a measure of the value of the degree in the marketplace.
How do you get a sense of the quality of an EMBA class?

The selectivity of the school is one factor in determining the skills, abilities, and experience of the peer group you\'ll work with throughout your studies. Also, at Wharton we find that diversity is key to dynamic class discussion. Make sure that there are a lot of viewpoints represented. What industries are the students coming from? What geographical areas are they coming from?
The best way to get a sense of the school is to visit. You will be spending a great deal of time with your classmates and professors, and the experience varies widely from program to program. Meet students, alumni, professors, and administrators. Sit in on a class if possible.
What about the class schedule?

Ask yourself whether the program fits your lifestyle and your schedule. Is it offered one day per week, every other weekend, during week-long sessions, or a combination? What kind of support structures are available during residency periods? What kind of group study and individual work are required and supported between class sessions? Are you looking for a local degree, or are you willing to travel farther for a program with a wide geographic reach, broad industry scope, and/or international reputation?
Be sure you consider your learning style as well. Some students find that if classes are too concentrated, it\'s difficult for them to absorb the coursework or that they lose momentum if the gaps between sessions are very long. At Wharton, we\'ve found that Friday and Saturday classes work best since it is more feasible for students to take the time out to attend. There\'s less disruption and they can they see the impact of learning on their ongoing work, creating a better value for the student and employer.
What differentiates the curriculum of various EMBA programs?

Many are "lockstep" programs, in which all students take the same classes, at the same time, throughout the duration of the program. That\'s fine when the entire class has exactly the same interests, but otherwise be sure that the electives you need are offered and that courses can be tailored to your career advancement goals. At Wharton, 45 percent of the classes are electives, and each class has the opportunity during the first year to select the electives offered to them in the second year.
If you are interested in senior management roles, make sure the program you choose focuses on helping you improve your leadership style. What kinds of leadership courses does it offer, and how effective are they?
And don\'t forget the basics — how many hours will be spent in class? Who teaches the courses? What is the core curriculum and how is structured?
What other qualities add value to an EMBA?

Many executive programs have differentiators, but be sure what is unique about a program is both relevant to your goals and integrated with the program\'s philosophy. Global residencies are very "hot" right now, but make sure that the international aspect of the program you choose is substantive and carried out in the rest of the curriculum. Ask whether the class has an opportunity to choose the location for the overseas project or residency. Team projects and experiential learning opportunities can also add value, giving students a chance to learn organizational dynamics and leadership while putting the lessons they learn into immediate play.
What about funding?

Funding is often a critical part of the decision-making process, and you will have to weigh your goals for your career, the value of the degree in the job market, and the availability of financial resources, including sponsorship and loans. Many employers are willing to sponsor students in executive MBA programs either fully or partially, and many schools offer loan programs to support students who are not fully sponsored. Check to see whether the school requires sponsorship, whether admission is contingent upon a student\'s receiving employer funding, and what loan opportunities are available for EMBA students. The Wharton MBA Program for Executives does not require sponsorship, and whether the student gets full or partial financial help has no effect on the admissions decision. Loans are available for qualified self-sponsored students.
Any final advice?

I would just reiterate my earlier suggestion that visiting a program is one of the best ways to determine if it is a good fit for you. Pursuing an MBA degree, whether in a full-time or executive experience format, involves a major commitment not only of money, but also of time and personal energy. When it\'s the right fit, it can be a life-changing experience. The time you invest up front in researching your choice is well worth the effort.

cthd007:
Only the Wharton MBA suits my demand. I want the crediblity of a full time on-campus Wharton MBA. The EMBA sounds like a "watered" degree, not an manifestation of your strength. What\'s more, I am not that old to apply for EMBA.

I want to live in the U.S. for two years. I want to bring my wife with me. I don\'t want to commute over the Pacific Ocean still as a Chinese.

The value of the pursuit is not only the courses and the Wharton brand. I want the authenticity of Wharton MBA to help me in the next step. I want to live and work with people in New England area.

Actually, I have considered the choice of EMBA. I supposed the interviewer would ask me why I don\'t apply for EMBA and prepared an answer to this question. To be frank, I don\'t like EMBA. I don\'t like San Francisco either. I am confident that I fit the Wharton MBA.

Do you have any constructive advice for Wharton MBA next year? Thank you.

Admissions/Why Wharton?

I had been a scientist for several years, working in drug discovery and design. Along the way, I realized that my interests had grown beyond the confines of the laboratory: I wanted to get involved with the economic side of the industry. Armed with business training, I knew I’d be uniquely positioned to bring emerging cures to patients.

I researched different top-tier MBA programs and while each had different strengths, Wharton’s focus on finance made it the most appropriate choice for me. I liked that Wharton has one of the best health care management programs around and a very strong alumni support network. I was also impressed with the diversity of students in terms of their ethnic, educational, and professional backgrounds.

I am actually a unique case because I originally decided to pursue an MBA, matriculating and finishing my first year in Wharton’s full-time MBA program. Since I’m the only provider for my family, I became concerned about not being able to work and generate income. At that time I had a friend in the Wharton MBA Program for Executives who suggested I consider that option. At first I was skeptical because the general impression about EMBA programs is that they are watered-down versions of regular MBA programs. I wanted the original-strength, most-potent version. My friend kept raving about the Wharton program, though, so I decided to check it out. I sat in on some classes, in a few cases attending the same class in both the daytime and executive programs to compare them. After extensive research, I came to the conclusion that Wharton’s MBA Program for Executives offered the same rigor as the full-time MBA, so for my second year, I switched. Right away, I loved it, and I knew I’d made a very good decision.

I may be able to provide some insight into helping you and others with the decision between Wharton, HBS, & other top programs. I went through the same struggle that many others have gone through. Obviously, deciding between schools should depend largely on what you are looking to get out of your MBA program. Wharton, HBS, Stanford, MIT, etc. are all excellent programs, but each one has its own particular strengths and weaknesses. In my case, I decided to only apply to Wharton/Lauder and fortunately was accepted in R1.

I became very familiar with Harvard Business School (and Sloan, for that matter) as a result of my education and indirect affiliation with HBS. I did my undergrad at Harvard and received my MS from MIT, and I have a number of good friends and a cousin who are graduates of HBS.

Despite my familiarity with Harvard and my improved odds of acceptance to HBS as a Harvard grad, I decided that I would apply to only Wharton in the first round and then to HBS and Stanford in the second round if I were not admitted to Wharton.

My rationale for choosing Wharton is based on the following:

1.                  Education—Because of my interests in private equity and other areas of investment, Wharton’s finance program was extremely attractive to me. Yet, Wharton also will enable me to balance the development of my finance skills with important management and leadership skills through the ability to double major in strategic management, Wharton’s Center for Leadership, and participating on one of Wharton’s advisory boards/committees.

2.                  International programs—Wharton offers an array of international academic, professional, and non-profit programs that no other school can match. The Lauder Institute will enable me to improve my language and international professional skills; Wharton’s alliance with INSEAD will allow me to gain a different educational perspective at the top European MBA program; the Global Immersion Program will increase my understanding of China; and the International Volunteer Project would allow me to contribute meaningfully to a developing region of the world.

3.                  Brand recognition—As hard as I tried to deny it, attending an MBA program with name-brand recognition was important to me. While Wharton may not be a household name, its reputation is phenomenal among those circles that truly matter in the business world.

What also amazes me is the strength of Wharton’s reputation despite not having a name like Harvard, Stanford, or MIT as a “crutch.” Penn is a great school, but most people are not even aware that it is in the Ivy League. Bottom line—Wharton, more than many of the top programs, has built its name on its own merit.

4.                  Location—To be honest, I was not excited about living in Philadelphia. Having grown up in Texas and having lived in Boston for 5 years, Brazil for 2 years, and South Florida for just less than a year, I was afraid that Philadelphia would be a significant downgrade in the quality of living.

When I visited Philadelphia in October, however, I was pleasantly surprised. Philadelphia boasts amazing architecture, excellent museums, and great restaurants. Moreover, it’s not nearly as cold as Boston and its relative proximity to NYC and DC are pluses for both career management and recreational purposes.

H/W/S what\'s the difference?

I\'m not a student any of these schools but have given a lot of thought to the same question as I\'ve been preparing my applications. I hope my opinions are helpful - if only to encourage you to do more research on your own.

For starters, HBS and Stanford both provide basically a general management education. Wharton, however, has you select from 18 majors (or create your own) – which I think is a bit more practical since you\'re not likely to become CEO right out of B-school and may be doing more hands-on work in a particular industry. There is also a significant difference in teaching style. HBS teaches by the case method exclusively. Wharton, however, uses different methods depending on the subject matter. Here, I think Wharton is again more practical since there are some essential business skills that I don\'t think can really be taught using the case method.

Another major difference is the size of the school. Both Wharton and HBS are very large (around 900 students a year) whereas Stanford has roughly a third the size. This difference is also reflected in the size of the campuses. HBS has far and away the most impressive facilities – it is its own extravagant campus completely separated from the rest of Harvard. Wharton also has great facilities - but HBS is the size of some universities.

When I first started looking into B-school I was looking at (in this order) Stanford, Harvard, MIT, and then maybe Wharton just because I had heard it was the best. However, after having visited all of those schools Wharton is now far and away at the top of my list. My personal take on it is that Wharton just has the most available to pick and choose from. It is like a giant all-you-can-eat buffet. For me, choosing HBS over Wharton would be a subtle form of idol worshiping since my biggest reason for me to go there would be the platinum-plated brand that I could impress my grandma with (she\'s never heard of Wharton).

But I\'ll also admit, I\'m not even sure I could get in to HBS. I\'ve worked for some no-name startups, have a technical background (3.6 GPA, 760 GMAT), and haven\'t had any amazing leadership opportunities. I know HBS says stardust isn\'t really necessary, but almost all the people I\'ve known who have gone there are way more charismatic than I and far less analytical. As I\'ve worked on my application, the HBS essays are a bit harder for me to write than were Wharton\'s.

One of the biggest advantages of HBS is the alumni network – it\'s probably the largest and most influential. But I\'m not interested in going to B-school just to join a club, which is almost what HBS seemed like to me when I visited. Of course, networking and alumni relations are important, its just not at the top of my list.

One last thing. The Wall Street Journal has been cited by many as a really odd and unreliable ranking (based on recruiter surveys). I think this year they ranked HBS #8 and Stanford #30. I don\'t necessarily buy into their methodology, but I\'ve learned a lot in following the rankings. For instance, there was an article in the Harbus (HBS\'s student newspaper) reacting to their ranking at #8 which was representative with comments I\'ve heard from current students. They di
