关于GMAT“平行中省略”的干货
2016/7/12 17:13:49

平行中省略,特别是比较中的省略往往很是恶心啊!
有的成分明明上一题可以省,结果下一题又不可以省了~
而且OG就有题目考到,OG的35题贴上~~~
Traffic safety officials predict that drivers will be equally likely to exceed the proposed speed limit as the current one.
(A) equally likely to exceed the proposed speed limit as
(B) equally likely to exceed the proposed speed limit as they are
(C) equally likely that they will exceed the proposed speed limit as
(D) as likely that they will exceed the proposed speed limit as
(E) as likely to exceed the proposed speed limit as they are
虽然选出来了,但是D选项当时怎么也搞不懂为何省略了they are,感觉自己懵懵懂懂知道一些什么,又没有形成体系~
然后就在gmatclub上看到了一位manager级别的大神贴的啊~直戳我心 贴上来分享给大家~其实我觉得还是要弄清语意啊~
Rule tested- Parallelism (ellipsis)
"toexceed" is implied in the second half of the sentence.
Thisis a case of ellipsis in comparison. In this some words omitted from thesentence to make it more concise. Both noun and verb can be omitted. Theomitted words should be present in the first part of the sentence in the sameform. 名词动词皆可省
Jim'spen is brighter than Alex's (pen). - Correct! ("pen" is implies)
Jim issmarter than Alex (is). - Correct! ("is" is implied)
Theomission of a noun for concision is straightforward. Just make sure that the 2nouns in the sentence can be logically compared. 只要逻辑语意正确,名词是都可以省略的。
Butthere are certain exceptions when you are deciding whether to include averb in the second half of the sentence.
重点来了,那么哪些时候动词不可以省略呢?就像D选项少了they are就不正确了。
1.Tense Shift时态转换的时候
If theverb tense changes from the first to the second half of the sentence, then theverb must not be omitted in the second half.
· Youlook more beautiful think year than last year. - Incorrect
· Youlook more beautiful this year than you did last year.- Correct
2.MeaningAmbiguity- 省略了就会造成歧意的时候
Do notomit the verb if doing so will make the sentence’s meaning ambiguous.
I lovemy dog more than my friend. - Incorrect
Here, the intended meaning could be that I love my dog more than I love my friend, OR
that Ilove my dog more than my friend does. Since the omission of the verb in thesecond half of the sentence distorts the meaning, this sentence is incorrect onthe GMAT.
I love my dog more than I lovemy friend.- Correct! I love my dog more than my friend does.- Correct!
Coming to the option D and E
Option D makes a parallelism error. If wesimplify, we get the following structures:
D. Drivers will be
as likely that they will exceed the proposedspeed limit
as the current one (speed limit)
Comparinga clause with a noun phrase.
E. Drivers will be
as likely to exceed the proposed speed limit
as they are (to exceed ) thecurrent one (speed limit) Comparingtwo clauses.
干货趁热吃着,大家还有什么好的建议都提提提~~~ 一起进步!
