一、学校/项目

  1. What does Operations Research mean to you?
I think Operation Research is a useful tool for me to solve the financial problems. Operation Research is the study of maximize or minimize the target under certain controlled conditions. Since I wanna be a fund manager in the future, I believe that operation research can offer me financial models to manage my portfolio better. In fact, the famous Mean-Variance Model is the best example of how operation research helps finance. It turns the daily issue in the financial market into mathematics model. And it points out a way to balance profit and risk. Also, I believe that, with the popularity of big data and fin-tech, operation research will facilitate risk management. It could find out a better algorithm for credit ranking system. Like FICO company has help many accountants or bankers to design plans by the decision optimizer tool. I attend the personal credit system project at Tsinghua University this year. This experience make me understand that Operation research is very important. If I had learned more operation research knowledge, I would contribute more to our team.
  2. Why are you interested in Columbia OR
It the experience of attending the personal credit system project at Tsinghua University this year that make me be interested in OR. Since my major is Finance, I sometimes gave my team members some suggestions about ways of credit ranking. But, theory is theory. There are a lot of data for students from school of computer science to process, and they tried to find a good algorithm to improve efficiency. It is the first time for me to know the real world application of operation research. I gradually become interested in OR and ask professor in the lab some questions about models and algorithm. I believe that, with the popularity of big data and fin-tech, more and more financial workers will solve problem by programming and modelling. The objective methodology will generally take the place of empirical or guess works. I wanna be a fund manager in the future, so operation research will definitely offer me great tools of risk or portfolio management. I wanna further improve my financial modelling skills. To catch the trend of fin-tech and satisfy the need of my clients in the future, I really need OR. Without doubt, the best MSOR program is at Columbia University. It is taught by a team of most intelligent professor and financial practitioners, so I not only learn the most advanced theory, but also first-hand practical technique in financial market.
  3. We are very proud of our curriculum; what courses/topics are you excited about? Since the big data and Fin-tech is becoming more and more popular, I am quite interested in financial engineering or business analysis topics. I learn programming and algorithm not for chasing fashion or fad things, but instead I believe data science will create big opportunity. It creates a new industry, which is not quite mature, like what Internet did decades before. There are too much for us to research in the field of business analysis and data science. However, this doesn’t mean that I will forget traditional finance theory. I am especially interested in the course called Asset Allocation. In fact, the famous Mean-Variance Model built by Markowitz is the best example of how operation research helps finance. I hope I can gain an insight into it, because I wanna be a fund manager in the future and use it to manage my portfolio. I had learned VaR model at Sichuan University and put it into use when I worked at China Merchant Futures Company as an intern. And I am attracted by the term conditional value at risk on the syllabus. I believe it will help me to control risk for portfolio in a more complex and more realistic condition.
    4. What questions do you have for our team 5. how do you feel about new York city? It gave me a chance to know and get in touch with people having different background, culture and perspectives.

二、经历

  1. Programming experience
  2. describe an interesting experience in your resume
What excites me the most is the experience of being a visiting student at Columbia University, when I was a junior student. At Columbia, I studied 4 business courses and I love the Security Analysis the most, because it gave me the first chance to evaluate a real-world company. The final paper assignment is a 10-page analysis report about the share price of an American listing company. We completed the report in a group and I was chosen to be the group leader. Our group chose the American Airline as target company.
  3. Walk through Resume根据你的简历讲讲你的经历
Hi! My name is XXX. I am 22 years old. Now I am a senior student at XXX University and major in Finance. At XXX University, I have attended many mathematical and Financial courses, like Probability and Statistics, the mathematical optimization in economic theory, and Principle of Financial Engineering. This semester, I am learning Financial stochastic processes. I also improved my programming skills by taking courses at School of Computer Science, like C++ and R. On 2016 Fall, I went to Columbia University for a semester to study Business courses, such as Security Analysis.
Besides learning theory at school, I invested my holiday time on accumulating practical skills. During my college life, I have worked as intern in various positions. These internship experience in PE, futures and security companies made me understand financial market better.
Study is not my whole story. I love playing music instruments. I have learned Chinese zither since I am 9 years old and passed the professional 7 level certificate of zither. On the orientation day for freshmen at Sichuan University, I played a song called high mountain and flowing stream for audiences.

三、管理能力

  1. What is your approach to manage important projects/things.?
First of all, I will set a goal for this project. Since most projects is completed by team work, I will suggest the team to find our common goal. Secondly, I will write a schedule for how the project or goal is finished step by step, to improve the efficiency. Time management is so important after all. Also, I think if it is a group work, communication is also very important. A good atmosphere of discussion will reduce conflicts. For example, I once was a group leader in a project for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training competition for college students.
  2. How do you deal with problems when you can’t seem to find the right solution?
Well, nowadays the Internet is so mature, and it is very convenient for us to search something on Google. I always learn new knowledge from Wiki. I believe self-study will help me find new ways to solve a issue. Also, I sometime use Quora, a place to share knowledge and better understand the world. This knowledge market never disappoints me. It user always have creative minds. In addition, turn to others’ help is also useful, like friends, parents and professor. Their advice is crucial. If it is an academic problem, I prefer to ask my professor. When I studied at Columbia University as a visiting student, I often email my professor to ask some questions. Asking professor is even more helpful because your professor sometime will not only solve your problem but also introduce a new knowledge to you. I have to say that professor at Columbia are so erudite and patient. They will led you to find solutions and always be there for student.
  3. How do you handle challenges
First of all, I need to build a positive attitude toward the challenge. Encouragement always support me to finish the task no matter what difficulty I face. Then, I need to analyze what kinds of resource I have to complete the task. Besides self-study from books or Internet, friends, professor and even parents all are the great choice. For example, when I worked as research assistant for the personal credit system project at Tsinghua University this year. I was responsible for coding for web crawl. But this time, professor ask me to code for fuzzy retrieve. It is new to me, so I search it on Google and self-study the code. On the processes of coding, I faced another challenges. My major is finance, so I am not quite familiar with SQL. I learned some data structure online, but I finally turn to the help of professor. He guided me to learn the theory step by step. Since it is a team work, I also turn to some PhD students. I use my advantages of Financial knowledge to provide credit measuring methods for them. In return, they taught me some coding. Know the advantage and disadvantages is important when handling challenges.

If someone has integrity, he will try his best not to damage the interests of others at this time. He should have his own principle, and always keep sympathy in his heart. He should be honest when encounter challenges. Keep his words or account with his value no matter what happen, especially in the extreme condition. We should put our feet into others’ shoes, and never move the cake of our clients when face high profits.
  2. How do you define ethics?
Ethics is the common sense widely agreed by a group of people, which direct our actions in terms of values. It is a kind of regulation of our behavior, but not necessary written down on paper. It requires us all give up some rights to move others’ cakes to benefit ourselves, but at the same time protect us from being harmed by others. It balances the interests of a group of people as a whole. It tells us what is good or bad. To judge whether a man is a good man, just see how he face lure or the worst condition. Ethics requires us to resist temptation, keep our words, be honest to our heart, and be sympathy to others. Ethics is not far from us. It stays in our daily lives. And we normally call it moral. For financial practitioner, our ethics is written down in the CFA textbook. We should not generate agency problem when we manage assets or even companies for others. As a fund manager, we should not increase the fluctuation of portfolio on propose, in order to earn huge amount of deduct money from the profits, but would not be punished when the portfolio lose a huge amount due to high risk. Like just quit the job. For students, we shall never help our friend to cheat in the final, no matter how good relationship you build with them. Ethics shapes our behavior to the goal of fairness and teach us to think for others.
