Foundations of Strategy--taught by Dr. Jeremy Petranka 
Strategy, at its core, is surprisingly easy to define. It is a cohesive, self-reinforcing plan designed to achieve a specific goal. Unfortunately, in today’s business environment there is a large gap between the theoretical and practical application of strategy. This class will bridge that gap. We will develop a general framework for analyzing any strategic situation with a focus on applying our approach to specific business environments. We will aim to understand how the linkages between a firm’s industry, resources, strategic positioning, and scope can be aligned to ensure a sustainable competitive advantage. In addition, we will examine the challenges in executing a strategic plan while incorporating strategic flexibility to allow for a changing industry environment.

Jeremy Petranka is an Associate Professor of the Practice in the Economics Area at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University. He has won multiple teaching awards, including Poets & Quants Best 40 Under 40 Professors, and the Cross-Continent MBA Award for Excellence in Core Teaching. Prior to his career in academia, Jeremy worked as a management consultant, working with Fortune 100 companies to align their information technology with their business strategies.
